The Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (MCJROTC) rank structure mirrors the officer and enlisted ranks of the United States Marine Corps. It provides cadets with a framework for leadership development, accountability, and progression through demonstrated performance, conduct, and academic excellence.
Cadets typically begin as Privates and, through dedication and performance, may advance through the enlisted ranks—Lance Corporal, Corporal, and Sergeant—before attaining senior enlisted billets such as Company First Sergeant or Battalion Sergeant Major.
Enlisted ranks are the foundation of the cadet battalion. Cadets at these levels develop discipline, teamwork, and personal responsibility while supporting daily operations. Advancement is based on merit, leadership ability, academics, and community involvement.
Officer ranks signify leadership, responsibility, and the ability to manage and inspire others. Cadet officers hold command and staff billets, leading platoons, companies, or entire battalions based on rank and experience.
Promotion within MCJROTC is an earned privilege, not a right. Cadets are evaluated by the Senior Marine Instructor (SMI) and Marine Instructor (MI) based on:
The rank structure builds order, respect, and purpose within the battalion. It teaches cadets how to lead, follow, and communicate effectively in a structured environment, preparing them for success both within and beyond the program.
